Enhanced Rider Scheme

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Enhanced Rider Scheme checks your motorcycle riding skills and provides training to help you improve.

You may qualify for a discount on your motorcycle insurance once you’ve successfully completed the scheme.

To take the Enhanced Rider Scheme you need to have a full motorcycle licence (category A2 or A) and have your own road-legal motorcycle, which needs to be capable of sustaining motorway speeds.

The scheme is suitable if you:

  • have just passed your test
  • are returning to riding after a break
  • are upgrading to a more powerful motorcycle
  • want to check your riding standard
  • are looking to improve your riding
  • are looking to volunteer with Blood Bikes Manchester

How the scheme works

You will first have a rider assessment with one of our qualified Advanced Riding Instructors, who is also a DVSA-approved Enhanced Rider Scheme Trainer. During the assessment, you will ride in different road and traffic conditions, including on motorways, and be expected to perform a slow-control exercise (typically a U-turn).

The ride will be long enough for your instructor to make a thorough assessment of your skills and typically lasts for 1.5 hours.

If the assessment shows you don’t need more training you will be issued with a “DVSA Certificate of Competence” straight away.

Otherwise, we will design a personalised training programme to help you improve your skills, at the end of which you will be riding at the required standard and will receive your “DVSA Certificate of Competence”. The type of training depends on what you need to improve and will comprise one or more 2, 3 or 4 hour training sessions. Your instructor will provide you with an estimate of the number and duration of the training sessions they expect are required to complete the scheme and will review your progress with you as your training progresses. We aim to help you reach the standard required as quickly as possible in order for you to gain maximum benefit from the scheme.

The DVSA Certificate of Competence entitles you to a discount with most motorcycle insurers.

The Assessment

The Enhanced Rider Scheme assessment is not a test as such, in that there is no Pass or Fail, but an assessment of your current riding ability. It follows the syllabus set out by the DVSA to enable your instructor to provide you with structured feedback on your riding. The DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme syllabus can be found at : https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dvsa-enhanced-rider-scheme-syllabus.

Here at Inner Circle Training, we have a small team of highly qualified Advanced Riding Instructors, all of whom hold a RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Riding Instruction and are DVSA-approved Enhanced Rider Scheme trainers. Your instructor will explain how the assessment will be conducted and discuss your existing riding experience with you at the start of the assessment. You will need to provide proof of your driving licence, insurance, tax and MOT (if required) and your motorcycle will be checked for road-worthiness and to ensure it is road-legal before starting the assessment ride. You will then be fitted with a radio over which you can be given directions. Your instructor will then observe you riding on a route that includes a mix of road and traffic conditions, which will include:

  • Urban (town) riding
  • Motorway and dual-carriageways
  • Country lanes and national speed limit roads
  • A slow control exercise – typically a U-turn

The assessment ride typically lasts around 1.5 hours, at the end of which your instructor will discuss your riding with you and either:

  • Issue you with your DVSA Certificate of Competence, should your riding be of the standard required
  • Discuss any areas of your riding that fall below the standard required and devise a training plan to help you improve

Should you require further training in order to achieve the standard required to complete the Enhanced Rider Scheme, your instructor will discuss this with you and devise a training plan accordingly.

Our Advanced Riding Foundation Course is guaranteed to help you reach the DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme standard, alternatively, further training would be via our Individual Personal Training.

The initial assessment lasts 2-2.5 hours and costs £60.
