Pass the Motorcycle Test (Module 1 & 2)

The Practical Motorcycle test is a 2-part test, with the 2 parts (or modules as they are called) booked and taken separately. You have to pass Module 1 before you can take Module 2, and you have 2 years from the date you passed your Motorcycle Theory test to do so.

You must pass your Theory Test at least 3 working days prior to your module-1 test day in order to secure your test.

We typically use the Bredbury test centre, which is less than 5 miles from our training centre in Stockport.

Module 1

The Module-1 test assesses your motorcycle handling skills. It is conducted at a DVSA test centre on a large tarmac off-road yard called the Motorcycle Maneuvering Area (MMA).

The exercises you will be required to perform are:

  • wheeling the motorcycle and using the stand
  • riding a slalom and figure of 8
  • a slow ride
  • a U-turn
  • cornering and controlled stop
  • cornering and an emergency stop
  • cornering and a hazard avoidance

There is a minimum speed requirement of 50kph (~31mph) for the last 2 exercises. The test lasts around 15-20 minutes.

On arrival at the test centre, your examiner will check your documents (driving licence, CBT certificate and Theory Test pass certificate) and that you are appropriately dressed. He will then ask you to lead him out to your motorcycle and then ride onto the MMA. He will tell you that you should treat the MMA as though it was a public road – which means you must conduct proper observations before moving off!

At the end of the test he will ask you if you want your instructor present for the debrief – you do, as it’s likely you won’t remember anything after he’s told you your result! – and then you will go into a little room where he will deliver the result. Assuming you have passed, he will issue you with a Module-1 Pass Certificate and a sheet recording any minor mistakes you have made (you are allowed a maximum of 5 minor faults). If you have been unsuccessful, he will tell you why and hand you a sheet showing the points you failed on.

Module 2

The Module-2 test assesses your road-riding skills. It is a pursuit-style test conducted on the public roads and starts from a DVSA test centre. The test route will incorporate a wide variety of road and traffic situations and at all times you will be expected to comply with the rules in the Highway Code and ride according to the Essential Skills.

On arrival at the test centre, your examiner will check your documents (driving licence, CBT certificate, Theory Test pass certificate and Module-1 pass certificate) and that you are appropriately dressed. He will then fit you with a radio headset similar to the one you used during your training and perform a basic radio check. He will then escort you outside where he will conduct a basic eyesight check – asking you to read a number plate from 20.5 metres. He will then escort you to your motorcycle before asking you 2 questions from the list of Motorcycle Safety Questions, one show-me, one tell-me.

Once the formalities are over, you will head out on the road. At some stage you will be asked to perform an angle start (pulling out from behind a parked vehicle) and an incline start (hill start). The test will also incorporate a section of “independent riding”, where you are expected to navigate a route using traffic signs and/or a series of directions provided by your examiner.

The test will last around 40 minutes with the independent ride section lasting around 10 minutes.

At the end of the test he will ask you if you want your instructor present for the debrief – you do, as it’s likely you won’t remember anything after he’s told you your result! – and then you will go into a little room where he will deliver the result. Assuming you have passed, he will offer to send your driving licence off for it to have the new category added – this is a good idea as it saves you postage and is generally quicker. He will also hand you your Practical Motorcycle Pass Certificate and a sheet recording any minor mistakes you have made (you are allowed a maximum of 10 minor faults). If you have been unsuccessful, he will tell you why and hand you a sheet showing the points you failed on.

The DSA has produced a series of videos that will explain what you need to do in the tests:

Our Full Licence Training Courses

We offer a range of training options for riders looking to obtain their full licence. This is often referred to as “Direct Access Training” or DAS. These courses cater for all category of licence:

Which course is appropriate for you will depend on your experience of riding a geared motorcycle and negotiating traffic on the road. Our new A1 (125cc) training course offering is specifically designed for riders with their own 125cc motorcycle or scooter who want a full licence but don’t want to ride a big bike – see here for more information.

This tool will help you identify the most suitable course.

Which Is The Right Course For Me?

All our full licence training courses cover the following:

  • Conversion onto the larger capacity motorcycles (A2 and A), if required
  • Recap of slow-riding skills learnt during CBT
  • All the exercises required for Module-1 including higher-speed exercises
  • Practicing the Module-1 exercises on the MMA at the DVSA test centre
  • Road-riding skills covering all road and traffic situations, including:
    • Response to signs and signals
    • Junctions – a variety of junction layouts
    • Traffic Lights
    • Pedestrian Crossings – of a variety of types
    • Roundabouts – mini and large multi-junction
    • Bends and Corners
    • Rural and Urban areas
    • Dual Carriageways and different speed limits, including National Speed Limit

Each day of your training course will comprise a mix of training with as much “saddle-time” as possible. When on the road, you and your instructor will be in radio contact at all times.

There is a legal maximum ratio of 2 trainees per instructor. We offer 1:1 training where required for a 50% premium over standard prices, subject to availability, please enquire for details.

Our Packages

We have developed a series of Direct Access course ‘packages’ that provide a structured course that includes the training you will need and both module-1 and module-2 motorcycle tests. These packages usually run to a defined schedule, as outlined here, although they can always be tailored to suit your individual circumstances.

New Rider Training Package

This package is aimed at novice riders or riders with little prior driving experience, and includes 4.5 days of training in addition to both practical tests.

The training and test days can be scheduled to suit and do not have to be taken consecutively. We recommend that at least one full day of the package is reserved for Module-2 training after you have passed your Module-1 test.

Your Module-1 Test session will be scheduled during the package to reduce the time you need to take off work, with the Module-2 Test session arranged after completion of your training.

Competent Rider Training Package

This package is aimed at riders who either have a good level of motorcycle control or who are confident, competent car drivers, and includes 3.5 days of training in addition to both practical tests.

We recommend that at least one day is reserved for Module-2 training after you have passed your Module-1 test.

Your Module-1 Test session will be scheduled during the package to reduce the time you need to take off work, with the Module-2 Test session arranged after completion of your training.

Experienced Rider Training Package

This intensive package is the shortest package we recommend.

It is aimed at riders who have completed their CBT and ridden on the road for some time or who have good machine control and are also confident, competent car drivers. It is not suitable for riders who have not passed a practical driving test as there is insufficient time on the road to cover all the requirements of the module 2 test.

It lasts 2.5 days including both practical tests – one of these days will be for module-1 training including mock-tests on the Motorcycle Maneuvering Area (MMA) at the test centre.

Your Module-1 Test session will be scheduled on the 2nd day of the package to reduce the time you need to take off work, with the Module-2 Test session arranged after completion of your training.

Single Training Sessions

In addition to our course packages we also offer training either as half-day or full-day sessions.

These sessions are also available to riders who have started to learn with another training school and are not progressing as well as they would like, or for whom a full package may not be appropriate.

Taking the Tests

When you are ready to take your test we will book it for you, and as we pre-book test slots we can often schedule tests at shorter notice than normal.

As you are not permitted to ride a large motorcycle without being in radio-contact with a qualified instructor, we need to escort you to the test centre and wait whilst you take your test. We also like to ensure that you are suitably warmed-up and ready to show the examiner how good you are, so we include an hour of training time before we need to get you to the test centre. After your test we will attend the examiner’s debrief (unless you don’t want us to!) before finally escorting you back to the training centre.

Test sessions are therefore at least 2 hours long, unless included as part of your package. Your actual test time will depend on availability and suitability, but we will do our best to find a test that suits you.

In the unfortunate event of you being unsuccessful, we will immediately re-book a test for you as soon as practical, bearing in mind the DVSA restrictions (before rebooking you need to wait 3 working days for Module-1 and 10 working days for Module-2).

Should your test be cancelled by the DVSA, we will assist you in making the necessary claims for a refund.

Note you need to give us at least 3 clear working days’ notice should you wish to cancel your test or you will lose your fees.

What do I need to bring and what should I wear?

You must bring:

  • Your Photocard driving licence (if you have an old paper-style licence please also bring photo-ID)
  • Your CBT certificate (DL196)
  • Your Theory Test pass certificate (only needed for Module-1 or Module-2 test sessions)
  • Your Module-1 pass certificate (only needed for Module-2 test session)
  • Your glasses if you need them to see distance
  • Money for lunch or a packed lunch

Your must wear:

  • Sturdy over-ankle boots (not trainers, shoes or canvas shoes)
  • Motorcycle gloves (we carry a small stock of cheap gloves you can buy but we can’t lend you a pair for hygiene reasons)
